Munich bar Schwarzer Dackel is one of the first bars in Germany to offer shuffleboard. Read on to find out how this has set them apart from the competition.

‘Unpretentious and comfortable’ is how customers describe Munich bar Schwarzer Dackel (or Black Dachshund).  A wet-led bar in the Westend of Munich, it has a big craft beer, wine and cocktail offer and hosts a variety of live music and entertainment.  Playful branding in the form of hand-drawn illustrations of its namesake, the iconic German sausage dog, help the bar to stand-out and engage with its community in a city that is spoilt for choice when it comes to bars.

Oh and did we mention, it happens to be one of the only venues in Munich with a shuffleboard, giving it the competitive edge.

Schwarzer Dackel Owner David Blake Walker evidently favours a fun, light hearted approach and has successfully translated this into his marketing and hospitality offer. His decision to install a 14 ft Gentry SHUFL table back in 2018 was largely driven by personal experience: he grew up in the US playing shuffleboard and so understood the advantage that a SHUFL table could bring to his business.

“Once you’ve played shuffleboard, you’re a fan for life.  It’s fun and memorable for our customers but it also gives us a competitive edge in Munich, a city with limited social gaming options, ensuring our clientele have another reason to visit us,” explains David. “The table gets booked up every day and is especially good at luring customers in the early evening.”

The addition of a shuffleboard created a new revenue stream for the bar.  Schwarzer Dackel customers pay 7 euros for a half hour session or 14 euros for an hour and the table takes, on average, around 1200 euros per month.   As well as generating its own revenue, it has also stimulated an uplift in wet sales.

“Our players let the puck slide whilst enjoying a beer and the loser takes the next round. We find that people are drinking more when they play shuffleboard than when they just sit at the table.  If we had more space, I’d buy a second table!” adds David.

Regular tournaments are planned for next year at this go-to shuffleboard destination in Munich.
